Retention: Holding Attention
If thumbnails get them in the door, retention keeps them at the party. YouTube's primary goal is to keep users on the platform. The metric they value highest is Average View Duration (AVD) combined with total session time.
The Crucial First 30 Seconds
Check your analytics. Most channels lose 30-40% of their audience in the first 30 seconds. To fix this, you must construct a solid hook. Do not use generic intros, animated logos, or "Hey guys, welcome back." Deliver immediately on the promise made by the title and thumbnail.
Pacing and Pattern Interrupts
Attention wanes quickly in the digital age. You need to reset the viewer's attention constantly using pattern interrupts. This doesn't mean chaotic editing; it means intentional changes in stimulus.
Visual Interrupts
B-roll, text on screen, zooming in slightly on jump cuts, or changing camera angles. Aim for a visual change every 3 to 8 seconds.
Audio Interrupts
Sound effects, music shifts, or changing vocal inflection. Audio is 50% of the experience and heavily dictates pacing.
Narrative Interrupts
Raising a new question or introducing a complication right as the previous point concludes. Open a new loop before closing the old one.
The Payoff
Never drag out the ending. Once the primary value of the video has been delivered, the viewer will click away. Wrap up quickly, direct them to another video on your channel to increase session time, and cut to black.
